What actually matters in email marketing software
Email remains the highest-ROI marketing channel most businesses have, and the software choice shapes more of that return than most buyers expect. What we have learned from evaluating the category:
The pricing model matters more than the price
Two vendors at the same headline price can differ three-fold in cost at scale because one bills per contact and the other per send. Large, occasionally-mailed lists should almost always choose volume pricing; small, frequently-mailed lists often the reverse. This single modelling exercise changes more recommendations than any feature comparison we run.
Automation ROI concentrates in a few flows
Across e-commerce accounts, a small set of flows — welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase — generate the overwhelming majority of automated revenue. Platforms that make these excellent (and measurable) beat platforms with a hundred features nobody configures.
Deliverability discipline moved to the sender
With Gmail and Yahoo enforcing authentication and spam-rate thresholds, your domain reputation now travels with you between platforms. Software provides the tooling; the list hygiene and consent practices that determine inbox placement are yours — which makes switching vendors easier and sloppier sending more visible.
The suite consolidation is real
Mailchimp, Brevo and Klaviyo are all swallowing adjacent functions — SMS, landing pages, light CRM, reviews. Convenient, but evaluate each piece on its merits: the bundled tool is rarely the best in class, just the easiest to switch on.
